Poonhill is named after the hill tribe Pun, inhabitants of Ghorepani and the surrounding area. It is also a vantage spot for the most panoramic scenery from the far western Himalaya of Dolpo, Mt. Dhaulagiri, Annapurna including Mt. Machhapuchare (Fish Tail) Manaslu all the way to Ganesh Himalayan range. Nearly 600 kilometres of mountain ranges can be viewed from this great spot with the spectacular sunrise on the mid western Himalaya range. This part of the walk is very pleasant until Kimrong hola where we will stop for lunch. The trail from here leads uphill for 1-2 hours, once at the top of the ridge the walk is fairly easy all the way to the village of Chomrong the last village and the gateway to the sanctuary.
From Chomrong the trail leads to the terraced farm fields as you descend to the river. After the bridge it’s uphill most of the way for 2-3 hours till you reach the small place of Khuldi-ghar. After Khuldi the trail leads down hill for 1-2 hours till you reach Bamboo, a place in the midst of the bamboo, rhododendron and oaks forest with a couple of teahouses. It then reaches the small shrine at Panchen Barah and from here the trail climbs to Himalaya hotel where we will stay overnight.
From the Himalaya hotel it’s about an hours walk, first on a rocky trail through forests then up a steep ravine, to Hinko at 2,960 m. The trail crosses a ravine & a major avalanche track just beyond Hinko, then climbs through large boulders. About half an hour beyond Hinko we reach Deurali at 3,000 m. As the trail continues into the sanctuary, it crosses two wide avalanche tracks on a narrow trail that huddles up against the cliffs. The trail then descends to meet the Modi Khola & follows the river to Bagar. From Bagar we climb across more avalanche paths cross a moraine & a stream, then climb towards an area known as Machhapchhre Base Camp (MBC) at the elevation of 3,480 m. You can have panoramic views of Hiunchuli, Annapurna I, Annapurna III, and Gangapurna & Machhapuchhre (6,997m.).

The trek is very pleasant as you reach the higher ground with magnificent views of an array of snow peaks all around you with Annapurna I, a great wall of a mountain from this north west face. Annapurna Base Camp has 2-3 teahouses, with the superb panoramic views. In the afternoon you can take an optional short walk around to immerse with the surrounding scenery.
After a great time here we retrace the journey back to Dovan via Machhapuchare Base Camp. The area is cold & windy & is often snowbound and reaches to Deurali where lunch will be served. The trek continues further to Dovan where we will stay overnight.
From Dovan, the trail descends all the way to the bridge and from the bridge it is uphill to Chomrong. After a break here at Chomrong the walk leads to a short downhill path, descending towards Jhinu. The trail is quite steep downhill for an hour, till you reach the village on the ridge. You can visit the hot springs down below by the river Modi near Jhinu village where we stay overnight.
In the morning you can enjoy good scenery having breakfast. We then trek down towards the Modi River at Phedi between Landruk and New Bridge. After crossing Modi Khola (name of river ) on a suspension bridge with a view of wild honey bee hives on the rocky cliff, from here the trail leads to a gradual climb all the way to Landruk village for lunch. From here the path leads to a gradual walk on the winding trail for an hour to a small settlement at Tolkha for the overnight stay.
Tolkha gives grand views of Annapurna south and Hiunchuli can be seen right from your room. With the lovely morning at Tolkha, our journey continues on the gradual winding path towards Bhaise Kharka a small settlement at the base of the hill, from here it is less than an hour climb through the beautiful rain forest to the top of the ridge at Deurali, the highest point of this trek.
